The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved the first drug to treat erectile dysfunction, Levitra, and other impotence symptoms.
The drug is approved to treat men with erectile dysfunction by improving blood flow and promoting sexual activity. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the first drug to take advantage of the new drug, the agency said.
The drug is a generic version of Levitra, the first of its kind for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men.
In the study, Levitra demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in erectile function and a statistically significant improvement in sexual activity compared to placebo (P<0.001).
It was noted that it had not shown the benefit of Viagra.
“It is important that patients taking this drug report any unusual symptoms or changes in sexual function within the first 6 months of treatment,” said Dr. John R. Dole, director of the Division of Urology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., in his statement.
“In the vast majority of cases, the benefits of the medication are modest, but in some patients, it can have long-term adverse effects,” Dole said.
The FDA has warned that use of the drug could increase the risk of stroke, the most severe type of heart disease, heart failure, and stroke-related deaths.
The drug, which is also a generic version of Viagra, is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The FDA said it was not aware of any adverse events reported in this study related to the drug. In addition, the drug’s manufacturer, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, did not provide details on the side effects.
A spokesman for Bayer, however, declined to comment.
Levitra is the first of its kind in the world to be approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

The FDA said that the study was designed to evaluate how much the drug can cause in the body, such as heart and blood pressure, but that there was no known relationship between taking the drug and any heart and blood pressure changes.
